Lynn was a mother of four when she began her career in the early 1960s, and while many of her songs are filled with details from her unique life, they had a universal appeal. She wrote about intimate matters – from a difficult and exhausting childhood to arguments with her husband – but she managed to strike a collective nerve.
Never mentioning politics or women’s liberation, her hits in the 1960s and 1970s helped change long-held notions of gender roles. “Rated ‘X'” and “Don’t Come Home A Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” were personal pleas, not political treatises aimed at ending double standards.
Lynn did all this at a time when women were the majority of voices through which men’s words and melodies could be heard. She was the first prominent woman in Nashville to write and record her own material and was one of the first female music stars to create her own hits.
