Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park, Spring, Formation, Geyser, Landform, Geographical Feature, Body Of Water
Old Faithful, Geyser, northwest Wyoming, United States, located at the top of the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. Old Faithful is the most famous, though not the tallest, of all the geysers in North America. It was named by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition in 1870 because it appears every 63 to 70 minutes in “faithfulness.” However, this discovery continued to show that the explosion occurred very quickly, with intervals varying from 33 to 120 minutes. After the 1983 Sugar Peak (Idaho) earthquake, the intervals became more frequent, although detailed observations since 2000 show that most eruptions typically occur every 60 to 110 minutes, with an average of every 90 minutes. In the end, however, the naturalists at Yellowstone found that predictions could only be made accurately from one event to the next. Exactly when the next eruption will occur is determined by the duration of the previous eruption: the longer the eruption, the longer the eruption.

Old Faithful is an example of a cone geyser. Conical geysers are found on Earth as clasts of siliceous sinter (geisserite). Conical geysers often produce explosions that last seconds or minutes. The decay time of Old Faithful is 1.5 to 5.5 minutes. Each explosion releases steam and 3,700 to 8,400 gallons (14,000 to 32,000 L) of hot water. The geyser’s fountain-like columns reach an average height of 130–140 feet (40–43 m), although eruption heights can exceed 180 feet (55 m). During an eruption, the water temperature at the geyser vent is about 203-204 degrees Celsius (95-95.6 degrees Celsius).
Severe Drought Could Impact Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Geyser
Upper Geyser Basin has Yellowstone’s largest hydrothermal feature of any visitor center in the park. The historic Old Loyal Lodge (1903-04) is one of the country’s largest parks; The Old Loyalist Lodge (1918-28) and other pubs are also in the area. In 2010, Yellowstone National Park officials opened an authentic visitor education center. These facilities give park visitors the opportunity to learn more about the park’s geology, hydrothermal properties, and Old Faithful Science and other hydrothermal features. What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name “Yellowstone”? For many, the answer will be Old Faithful.

Yellowstone National Park Adventure Guide
Old Faithful is the world’s most famous geyser. For decades, these geysers have been erupting in a highly reliable pattern. It’s so reliable, in fact, you can even get an online appointment to help you plan your visit.
Much of Yellowstone is on top of a large volcano. This large volcano powers geothermal activity in the park, including regular eruptions of Old Faithful. In fact, the Old Faithful site is above a large magma lake. This magma chamber is huge, containing enough magma to fill the Grand Canyon 11 times!
Old Faithful is not the largest geyser in Yellowstone. The largest geyser is Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin, but since it erupts less than 50 times a year, you’ll be more than happy to see this geyser in action.
Wilderness Preservation At Yellowstone National Park
The eruption of Old Faithful lasts from 1.5 to 5 minutes, during which time, the water reaches a height of 106 to 184 feet (32 to 56 meters), with an average height of 130 feet. Between 3,700 and 8, 400 gallons of water are ejected from the geyser.
In the early days, visitors threw their dirty clothes into the geyser. When Old Faithful is removed, it will shed the cloth back on, cleaning it in the process. Woolen clothes emit heat from the steam, but other clothes work well.
Old Faithful sheds every 60 to 110 minutes, which is 16 to 17 times a day. Sometimes, it takes two hours for another eruption.

There is a correlation between the interval between eruptions and the duration and intensity of previous eruptions. After a short burial, it will be a short time until the next burial. After the long destruction of the old faith, wait a long time for another destruction.
The Old Faithful rises on such a reliable basis that the National Park Service posts a forecast of hearing times on their website. You can download an app on your phone that will give you the predicted time.
Forecast times are also posted at the Old Faithful Visitor Center and Junior Ranger Station, as you walk into Old Faithful from the parking lot.

To get here, it is a 1.1 mile round trip. It is a short and steep uphill walk to reach the viewpoint. We got here 30 minutes before the predicted hearing time and had a picnic while we waited.
One of the best places to see the ruins of Old Faithful is from the lookout point at the Old Faithful Hotel. Grab a drink at the bar, have a seat and enjoy the view. I recommend getting there at least 30 minutes before scheduled blast time if you want a front row seat.
