“Watts’ soft, primitive illustrations … appeal to war (in the best sense), representing the animals sympathetically, the defeat of the robbers with some humor, and the setting there is joy in nostalgia.”

This funny story by the Brothers Grimm is about four animals who are convinced that they can make a good living as musicians. They are, of course, but not the sweetness of barking, screeching, mewing and lolling that makes them dinner – they can make even scarier sounds!

Theme: Our elders respect. The animals were born in history, and they put long years of work, now the owners think they are useless and want to take them away – is it fair?
A bronze statue of the Bremen Town Musicians was erected in 1953 in front of the Bremen Town Hall. Statues of German veterinarians also feature animal musicians. Another effigy of the statue can be found in the Lyndens Sculpture Garden, located in Milwaukee.
Bremen is a city in northern Germany on the Wisurge river, 37 miles from the north sea.
The Bremen Town Musicians
A man had a donkey, which for many years faithfully carried sacks to the mill; but his strength failed, and he became more and more unfit for work. His owner began to wonder if it was worth keeping this old donkey.
The donkey, seeing that no good wind was blowing, ran and took the road to Bremen. “There,” he said, “I will be a musician.”
When he had walked a long way, he found a dog lying on the road, panting as if it had run to exhaustion. “Why are you panting, great man?” asked the donkey.
Day 2 The Bremen Town Musicians. The Big Question… How Can We Work Together?
“Ah,” said the dog, “I grow old and weak every day; I can no longer hunt. My master wants to kill me, and I have fled; now how shall I find my bread?”
“I’ll tell you what,” said the donkey, “I’m going to Bremen, and there’s a musician in town; come with me, and work as a musician too.”
The dog agreed, and so they went. Before they came to the cat, sitting on the road with a face like three days of rain! “Now, old man with clubs and claws, what happened to you so badly?” asked the donkey.

“Who is happy when his neck is in danger?” answered Catus. “Because I am old, my teeth are destroyed by logs, and I would rather sit by fire and wire than be surrounded by rats.” My mistress wanted to drown me, so I ran away. This is not a good idea. Where do I go?”
Catus thought about it a lot and decided to go with them. After this the three fugitives arrived at the village, where there was a rooster sitting at the gate, and the roosters were doing it with all their might. “He crossed your cock, and my bald head,” said the donkey. “What’s wrong?”
“The guests will come on Sunday, and the hostess will not be kind,” said the chicken, and he told the cook that he intended to eat me in the soup tomorrow, and to cut off my head this evening. Now I do the full chicken pitch, while I can.

“Ah red bird,” said the donkey, “I’d better come with us.” We are going to Bremen; you will see better than anywhere else. You have a good voice, and when we make music together, we must have this quality!
The rooster nodded at this plan, and the four of them went together. However, they could not reach the city of Bremen in one day, and in the evening they reached the forest. The donkey and the dog sat under a big tree, the cat and the rooster sat on the branches – but the rooster flew to the top, where he was safest. Before he went to sleep, he called his friends that the house was not far away, he saw the light. The donkey said: “Then we had better get up and go, because the shelter here is not good.” The dog thought that some bones with some food would do him good too!
And thus they went forward, and soon they saw a light brighter and greater in appearance, until they came to the house of the robber’s well. The donkey, who was the biggest, went to the window and looked: “What do you see, my gray horse?” asked the chicken. “What did I see?” replied the donkey. “A table full of things to eat and drink, and robbers sitting on it feasting.”

“That’s it for us,” said the rooster. “Yes, indeed. Ah, how I wish we were there!” said the donkey.
Then the animals put their heads down and thought about how to invite them in and join the robbers at the table.
They began to play their music together: the donkey brayed, the dog brayed, the cats meowed, the roosters crowed. Then they entered the room through the window, so the glass shook! At this terrible noise, the robbers appeared, thinking that it was no different from a ghost entering, and fled in great terror into the forest. The four companions sat down at the table, satisfied with excess, and ate as if they had been fasting for a month.
The Bremen Town Musicians Fairy Tale (original) Story By The Brothers Grimm
When the four musicians had done this, they put out the light, and each one found a place to sleep according to his character and what suited him. The donkey fell on an elbow in the straw, the dog behind the door, the cat in the hearth around the hearth, and the rooster rested on the beam of the roof; and, tired from the long journey, they quickly fell asleep.
After midnight, the robbers saw from a distance that the lights in their house were no longer on. The captain, seeing that he was silent, said, “We need not fear ourselves,” and ordered one of them to go and examine the house.
The messenger, when everything was found, went into the kitchen to light a candle, and with the bright eyes of a burning cat in the burning embers, he lit it to light it. But the cat didn’t understand what he wanted to do, flew on his face, spitting and scratching. Out of fear, he ran to the back, but the lying dog jumped up and bit his leg. And the donkey ran across the field to a pile of hay, and the donkey gave him a smart kick with his hind leg. The Gaul also, awakened by the noise, sprang to life, and shouted from the beam: “Gallus-duli!”
