Don McLean’s 1971 hit “American Pie” was inspired by the plane crash that killed 1950s rock star Buddy Holly. According to the New York Times, the Beechcraft Bonanza plane carrying Holly crashed into the farm minutes after taking off from Iowa’s Mason City Airport. Authorities blamed terrible weather for the crash. Holly was a rising star in the music industry with songs like “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll Be the Day” with her band The Crickets. He died on February 3, 1959 at the age of 22.

Country music star Patsy Cline was in a small plane headed to Nashville, Tennessee after a performance in Kansas City, Kansas when it crashed in a wooded area on March 5, 1963. Klina was 30 years old. According to The Tennessean, the plane belonged to Cline’s manager, Randy Hughes, who was flying the plane. Grand Ole Opry members “Cowboy” Lloyd Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins were also on board. All four people died in the accident.

The Tennessean reported that the group stopped in Dyersburg, Tennessee to refuel before attempting to land at their destination. Airport owners warned Hughes not to fly because they were experiencing severe weather. However, Hughes thought they were fine because it was a short flight. The journey turned out to be more treacherous than expected. According to the documentary “The Real Patsy Cline,” “Since [Hughes] was not an instrument pilot and relied only on visual contact with the ground, he was unable to navigate through the dense storm clouds.” The plane crashed about 20 minutes after taking off from Dyersburg Regional Airport.
