Skilled Musicians In The Bible
Music is a gift from God. And to those who are gifted with singing in the church, Christ is given to strengthen his body. To this end, those who lead the church in singing should serve with true faith, pure hearts, and skillful hands. For various reasons, it is not always easy to unite head, heart and hands. But it is something we must pray and do

Nine Foundational Pillars Of Worship Songwriters By Chris Clayton
We continue the series of episodes based on biographical sketches from Lewis Holmes’ book The Secret of Music. This story comes from ancient Israel, p. MI. k.
In the biblical text of 1 Samuel 16, we deal with Saul, the first king of Israel. Saul’s advisers suggested that he seek out a musician who could play the lyre; can ease his pain. The lyre is an important symbol of divine connection, a means of communication with God. The advisers recommended a shepherd named David, who was known for his musical talent. Saul summoned the young musician, and David’s lyre calmed the “evil spirits” that haunted the king.
In the next chapter, David kills Goliath with only a sleigh and a stone. These two stories have equal weight in history. David is described as a warrior, military musician. His musical influence is evident in the world’s three major religions. Both Judaism and Christianity revere the psalms of David as examples of religious, musical expression, and Islam honors David as “the most beautiful voice God ever created.”
A Heart For Excellence: Thinking Biblically About Skill In Singing
An ancient document found in Qumran, Palestine states that David wrote over 4,000 songs. Tradition also attributes to him 73 of the 150 verses of the biblical Book of Psalms. Psalm 144 describes David playing the ten-stringed lyre that some invented. These numbers and these claims are not consistent with modern scientists. There’s a lot of controversy here. It is clear that David was and still is an important figure in religious music.
Many scholars believe that David wrote the song of the first chapter of 2 Samuel, possibly mourning the deaths of King Saul and his son Jonathan, David’s best friend.
Saul and Jonathan, dear and beloved! In life and death they were not divided: they were faster than eagles, stronger than lions. How mighty have fallen, Weapons of war perished!
Deal With The Devil
The story of David’s accession to the throne is long and complicated, but his 33-year reign as king witnessed the birth of a mighty empire. David was famous not only for his victories in battle, but also for his excellence in playing music, writing songs, worshiping and dancing. David was believed to have celebrated this festival, especially before the Ark of the Covenant through the streets of Jerusalem, as a way to bridge the gap between the conquered Israelites and the native Canaanites. David made this city the political, religious and artistic center of the entire kingdom. His legacy lives on in billions of religious practices in the region and around the world. Not bad for a lyre played by the shepherd of Bethlehem.
