CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Willie Spence, former “American Idol” runner-up, died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a car crash in Tennessee, according to the music competition program. He is 23 years old.
Singer Died In Car Crash
Spence finished second to Chayce Beckham on season 19 of “American Idol,” which aired in early 2021. On Wednesday, the show’s official account announced his death on Twitter.

“We are saddened by the loss of our American Idol star, Willie Spence,” the tweet read. “He was a genius who lit up every room he entered, and he will be greatly missed. We express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.”
A preliminary Tennessee Highway Patrol report obtained by FOX shows the crash occurred around 4 p.m. Tuesday in Marion County in eastern Tennessee. The report said the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Spence was driving “went off the road” and struck the rear of a tractor-trailer parked on the eastbound shoulder of Interstate 24 near the 247-mile marker.
The report shows that both Spence and the 68-year-old tractor-trailer driver were wearing seat belts.
Singer Monique Escapes Death From Car Crash
The singer’s death was reported by multiple news outlets, including Douglas Now, at his home in Douglas, Georgia.
Spence performed Rihanna’s “Diamonds” during her audition, earning praise from judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. He later released an EP titled “The Voice”. Tany died early Saturday morning after he reportedly crashed his car into a structure in Jangheung County in southwestern South Korea.
The singer was traveling along the Namhae Highway to the city of Mokpo, located at the southern tip of South Korea.
In a statement, the singer’s agency, HOM Company, said: “Tany died on the night of April 14 while driving his car from Jangdong-myun in Jangheung County to Mokpo on Namhae Highway, where he hit a structure. has been completely lost.”

Tany, whose real name is Kim Jin-soo, rose to fame in December 2016 with “Always Remember,” a song honoring the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster.
In April 2014, the 6,825-ton ship MV Sewol sank with 476 people on board, mainly high school students. 304 passengers and crew members died in the disaster.
