Musicians Green Book – ‘Green Book’ is about race – also friendship, class and masculinity Green Book is about a concert in the Deep South in 1962 when a black pianist hires a tough-talking band from the Bronx. Rachel Martin talks to Mahershala Ali, who plays pianist Don Shirley.

Don “Doc” Shirley might be one of the world’s most famous classical musicians if it weren’t for the color of his skin.

As a black pianist in the 1960s, Shirley was shunned from most of the American music scene. The humiliation continued when he decided to move to the Deep South in 1962. Not only did he have to play unnecessary stages and styles, the trip also required a white chauffeur to take him safely from club to club.

It tells the story of Shirley and her friendship with Tony Vallelonga, the white man she hired as her driver on that 1962 tour. In an interview with Mahershala Ali, who plays Shirley, she explained why the musician felt compelled to move south.

“It would have been a lot easier for him to stay up north or go to Europe and tour and travel and make money,” Ali says.

On tour, Shirley and Vallelonga used the Negro Motorist Green Book, a nationwide business directory that welcomed black travelers while not in many locations.

A classical pianist and composer, Shirley grew up dreaming of playing on the world’s most prestigious concert stages. He began his musical career, taking piano lessons at age 2 and making his professional debut at age 18 with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat with the Boston Pops.

But Shirley’s dream of playing classical piano was put on hold when her mentor advised her that as a black man, she would not be welcome on concert stages around the world. He turned from his classical aspirations to playing jazz, performing genre-bending compositions that also incorporated hints of Negro spirituality and classical music.

I don’t know if he thought he could find anyone else. When it comes to a white man agreeing to work for a black man in 1962 and moving him around the South, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who could check all the boxes. I think he approached her – and I’m just guessing – but I think he approached her from the point of view of believing that he could control the space in the car.

The Boss puts up with it because he needs his presence to complete the tour, but Tony needs Doc.

It’s more about masculinity and identity – and giving people the space to define that for themselves. When we are born, we are constantly negotiating who we are, how we feel, what the world says and what we should be, so we all fit into our own categories. It’s more complicated than that. I had never seen the Dawn Shirley archetype before and I really liked it because it was so versatile.

This is the experience of the black artist in this country – focusing and concentrating on being commercially profitable or socially acceptable, but not on our talent and independence, thus ultimately realizing our potential.

From my father to my grandfather, to my grandmother, to my family – you’ve inherited a bit of struggle. So, after the Oscars, I have to take care of myself. … It doesn’t mean ‘a trophy here, then a lead role’. The situation is still the same, but you have to say, “Oh, you gave me this script? This is a great part, but I’ve done so much in my life. This is the main part? I really want to play this role. This is my role. .the role I wanted.”

I am proud, and I can talk about things and make changes not only for myself, but sometimes for a whole community of people. And those of us who are in that position, when we have such a platform, we must be very conscious of this responsibility, do well and act responsibly.
