First a bit of history. During the Great Migration, African Americans arrived in Chicago from the South, bringing with them the old musical traditions of jazz and blues. The genre became popular in small clubs in the south of the city – soon Chicago attracted such legendary musicians as King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong.

This free July festival features an incredibly diverse lineup of living legends and contemporary talent. For over 40 years, fans have flocked to the Chicago Jazz Festival in Millennium Park to hear free concerts by Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Ramsey Lewis and more. A week before the festival, free jazz concerts are held in all areas of Chicago.
Jazz has filled Andy’s house since 1977. Music lovers can enjoy live music, craft cocktails and Cajun-inspired cuisine any day of the week. If you’re here on the weekend, try brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. when the entrance is free.

Talked about during Prohibition, it was Al Capone’s favorite haunt (you can sit at his favorite booth at the end of the bar). Today, you’ll experience the same soulful atmosphere with live music every night of the week, from classics from the 30s and 40s to contemporary avant-garde music until the wee hours.

Jazz Showcase is a classic Chicago jazz club that has been entertaining audiences since the 1940s. Over the years, the Jazz Showcase stage has been graced by some of the biggest names in the genre, from international stars (Ira Sullivan, Count Basie, Richie Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, etc.) to homegrown talent. There are shows seven days a week, including a family brunch on Sundays where kids get in for free.
Listen to live jazz by candlelight at M Lounge, a cozy martini lounge in the South Loop. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays you can enjoy free shows with music from jazz to blues and R&B. Take a seat at the bar or cozy up in a cozy booth – wherever you sit, you’ll feel right at home in this retro charmer.
If you’re looking for a jazzy sound, head to Winter’s Jazz Club in Streeterville. The cozy club offers concerts six nights a week in a hall with 100 seats. The record focuses on jazz singers and straight styles, but does not shy away from other varieties of the genre: traditional, gypsy jazz, big band, New Orleans style, etc.

In the mid-to-late 1960s, the Buckingham family was quite popular in Chicago and later became famous around the world. In 1967, the band’s pop songs spawned five Top 40 hits, including “Kind of a Drag,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Original vocalist and North Sider Dennis Tufano attended Gordon Technical School. (now DePaul College Prep) continued to tour, performing the band’s hits.
Chance’s father, from the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, worked for the late Harold Washington and then-Senator Barack Obama. Since breaking into rap in 2012, Chancellor Jonathan Bennetts has become an international superstar and multi-Grammy Award-winning recording artist. He has also demonstrated his talent and versatility on the big and small screens. Despite his popularity, Chance still finds time to give back and support Chicago-related causes and programs.
Formed while some of its members were students at De Paul University, Chicago became one of the most successful bands in rock history. Bassist and side-sider Peter Setera also had a successful solo career. Known in the 1970s for such classics as “25 or 6 to 4” and “Feelin’ Stronger Everyday,” the 1980s saw pop ballads such as “It’s Hard to Say I’m Sorry” and “You’re an Inspiration”. in 2016, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
