A major Kansas City musical instrument retailer that remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic despite a stay-at-home order allowing only “essential” businesses to operate is now closed.

The 700,000-square-foot Guitar Center warehouse in Northland was closed after Kansas City law enforcement officers arrived to follow orders from Mayor Quinton Lucas, escorted by Kansas City Police.

Bill Snook, a spokesman for the Kansas City Department of Health, said the closure came after distribution center representatives contacted Guitar Center executives, who agreed to comply with the order.
“This business is currently closed and we are complying with the mayor’s stay-at-home order,” Snook said via email.
The distribution center employs about 300 people in three shifts to process musical instruments and order online musical instruments.

The establishment, formerly known as “Musician’s Friend,” claimed to comply with the guidelines defining the core business, but did not specify how. It also says the facility is highly automated, cleaned frequently and staffed to maintain the 6-foot social distancing recommended by health experts.
Kansas City spokeswoman Chris Hernandez suggested the warehouse could not be considered a core business following inquiries two weeks ago and said those concerned should call the city’s 311 line to file a complaint.
The Kansas City stay-at-home order went into effect after midnight on Tuesday, March 24. Since then, the distribution center has remained open.
