Musicians Died 2022 – While death is inevitable, it’s never an easy pill to swallow. This year, we sadly lost several hip-hop artists who touched the culture in some way.
Earlier in the year, bad news broke when Memphis rapper Snotty Wilde was shot and killed in Houston. The Tennessee native burst onto the rap scene in the early 2010s and scored a hit with 2014’s “Yayo” under the CMG Yo Gotti label. In December, a man was arrested and charged with Snotti’s murder.
Musicians Died 2022
Takeoff’s tragic death shocked the hip-hop world in November. The reserved Migos member was shot and killed outside a Houston bowling alley following an argument that turned into a shootout. Takeoff, who was 28 at the time of his death, was an innocent bystander in the situation, police said. The rapper, who will be remembered for his songs, was laid to rest after a large memorial service at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting.

PnB Rock’s death in September after an attempted robbery in Los Angeles made hip-hop headlines. The 30-year-old man from Philadelphia was shot and killed while eating at the Roscoes House of Chicken ‘N Waffles in South Los Angeles. Several people were arrested in his murder.
Grammy-winning rapper Coolio died in September. The California rapper, best known for his 1990s hits “Gangsta Heaven” and “Wonderful Journey”, has died aged 59. He is believed to have died of cardiac arrest while visiting a friend. His cause of death has yet to be determined.

Of course, the death of a musician comes as a shock not only to fans, but also to his bandmates and friends. When Dave Grohl hosted a tribute concert for late Foo Fighters frontman Taylor Hawkins, he was thrilled, as he said (via ET Canada): “You know nobody else can make you laugh or dance or sing like him. Read.” And when Coolio died in September 2022, as the BBC reports, several fellow rappers and musicians wrote of their shock, as well as their deep admiration for a talented artist and kind person. MC Hammer tweeted: “One of the nicest people I know. Good people. RIP Coolio.”
According to Rolling Stone, Calvin Simon’s journey as the godfather of funk began early in his life. It was in the late 1950s that Simon joined forces with singers Fuzzy Hoskins and Grady Thomas in George Clinton’s R&B group Parliament, which eventually merged with Funkadelic to form the famous Parliament-Funkadelic group, which is still active today.

As Simon’s official website states, he took funk, gospel and R&B to new heights with Parliament-Funkadelic and even laid the groundwork for hip-hop. But it hasn’t been an easy journey – all the while, Simon struggled with trauma: “The most important thing for me,” he once said, “was how I dealt with PTSD from my service in the Vietnam War.” As the situation between the band’s growing number of members became tense in the late 1970s, Simon left. He explained his decision: “People need to know that if you don’t like a situation, you have the option to leave and do something else.”
Simon has had a prolific solo career as a gospel musician and has also released albums with former P-Funk bandmates Funkadelic and The Original P. Thyroid Cancer. He was treated and appeared to be doing well when his wife succumbed to cancer. Then, in January 2022, Simon died at the age of 79. The cause of death has not been made public.
As the Miami Herald confirms, Miami rapper Wavy Navy Pooh was born Shandler Beaubien in 1994. Bobbin was very familiar with gun violence – his most famous song is “M.I.A.M.I. (Murder is a Matter of Matter)”. The rapper’s creativity is always up for debate. In Beaubien’s case, his songs were a reflection of his life. In May 2020, he was shot twice in the legs while driving, and shot at his assailant.
