Earlier in the year, bad news broke when Memphis rapper Snotty Wilde was shot and killed in Houston. The Tennessee native burst onto the rap scene in the early 2010s and scored a hit with 2014’s “Yayo” under the CMG Yo Gotti label. In December, a man was arrested and charged with Snotti’s murder.

Takeoff’s tragic death shocked the hip-hop world in November. The reserved Migos member was shot and killed outside a Houston bowling alley following an argument that turned into a shootout. Takeoff, who was 28 at the time of his death, was an innocent bystander in the situation, police said. The rapper, who will be remembered for his songs, was laid to rest after a large memorial service at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting.

Grammy-winning rapper Coolio died in September. The California rapper, best known for his 1990s hits “Gangsta Heaven” and “Wonderful Journey”, has died aged 59. He is believed to have died of cardiac arrest while visiting a friend. His cause of death has yet to be determined.

But it hasn’t been an easy journey – all the while, Simon struggled with trauma: “The most important thing for me,” he once said, “was how I dealt with PTSD from my service in the Vietnam War.” As the situation between the band’s growing number of members became tense in the late 1970s, Simon left. He explained his decision: “People need to know that if you don’t like a situation, you have the option to leave and do something else.”

Simon has had a prolific solo career as a gospel musician and has also released albums with former P-Funk bandmates Funkadelic and The Original P. Thyroid Cancer. He was treated and appeared to be doing well when his wife succumbed to cancer. Then, in January 2022, Simon died at the age of 79. The cause of death has not been made public.
