Musicians Clinic – Founded in 1998, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic is a state-of-the-art medical home for more than 2,600 musicians and cultural leaders in the greater New Orleans area. It is the first health care clinic in the country specifically designed to provide comprehensive and professional medical care, mental health services and social services to performing artists regardless of insurance or payment. The New Orleans Musicians’ Assistance Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that supports and expands the clinic’s mission to include factors affecting the well-being of performers and conducts major community outreach programs focused on health promotion and self-care. to strengthen immunity. NOMAF’s emergency fund was established to provide financial assistance to our patients in times of need. Many NOMC patients live in a cash-based economy, and most are well below the national poverty line. Although 27% of people in New Orleans live in poverty (via the Corporation for Enterprise Development and the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, Assets and Opportunities Profile), more than 80% of NOMC’s 2,400 patients fall into that 27%. used to pay for immediate needs: food, water, housing, clothing, rent and gas for vehicles. These non-medical needs come at a time when NOMAF has had to divert most of its funds from our emergency fund to address the unmet medical needs of our patients. NOMC is the medical home for 2,400 patients who are musicians, members of social services and glee clubs, members of Mardi Gras Indians, choir members, visual artists and photographers, dancers, actors, craftspeople, writers, and those involved in New Orleans music clubs. I work as bearers (and their families) of all the traditions of the unique culture of New Orleans. 78% of our 2,400 patients have been working as professional musicians in New Orleans for over eleven years. 22% of our patients are those who protect and promote the music, arts and culture of New Orleans.
