When Jordan Hall opened at the New England Conservatory in 1903, the hall’s acoustics were second to none—so excellent that music critics and performers called it one of the most acoustically perfect concert venues in the country. In 1994, NEC and Jordan Hall were jointly awarded National Historic Landmark designation for their impact on American music and their excellent acoustic qualities, making NEC the first dual-designated conservatory. The hall’s first major renovation, including air conditioning upgrades and new seating, cost $8.2 million in 1995; while some say the restoration has affected the hall’s acoustics, Jordan Hall remains a frequent stop in international arts circles and plays host to the annual Boston Early Music Festival, a week-long event dedicated to historic musical performances.
Ambassador Auditorium was originally built as part of Ambassador College, a liberal arts college run by the Worldwide Church of God.
In 1974, Ambassador College, a liberal arts school run by the Worldwide Church of God, opened the Ambassador Auditorium. Designed for church services and performing arts events, the space featured world-class lighting fixtures: pink onyx, crystals, rare African shedua wood and a bronze chandelier. Financial difficulties within the church led to the collapse of the college, beginning a nearly ten-year dark period in the hall’s music program. In 2004, the 13-acre site containing the hall was sold to Harvest Rock Church and Marantha High School. The venue has been converted into a private high school and concert venue, where world-famous musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma have performed. Today, the hall still hosts church services, and visitors can watch performances by the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra.

The Ohio Theater was decorated by Ann Dornan, one of the first women to graduate from the Columbia School of Architecture.
The Ohio Theater opened in 1928 thanks to the Scottish architect Thomas W. Lamb, who conceived the “palace for the average man” and then created his own. One of the first women to graduate from the Columbia School of Architecture, Ann Dornan decorated the theater with $1 million worth of furniture from around the world, including artwork for the African Corner Lounge. Film screenings and performances by artists such as Ginger Rogers and Cab Calloway were offered. It was about to be demolished in the middle of the century before locals raised over $2 million to save it; the newly formed Colombian Performing Arts Association bought it and renovated it. Recognized as the state’s official theater, the Spanish Baroque auditorium is now home to the Columbus Symphony, BalletMet, and Broadway in Columbus.
After 12 years of construction, Eggið opened in 1978. Architecturally and visually, the space was unique. The above-ground structure is reinforced with concrete beams, the weight of which is then distributed to an underground support that descends six floors underground. The interior walls of The Egg’s two theaters are made of Swiss pear veneer to improve acoustics and, like the exterior walls of the building, are also curved. The Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre, with a maximum capacity of 982, includes a hydraulically lifted stage that adapts the set for musical theater productions and concerts. The Lewis A. Swyer Theater seats 450 people, making the space more intimate for chamber concerts, lectures, and soloists. The 2019 schedule includes a New York Theater Ballet production of Cinderella and French singer Cyril Aimé.

St. The Paul Ordway Performing Arts Center cost $46 million, of which $7.5 million was donated by local resident Sally Ordway Irwin.
St. Paula resident Sally Ordway Irvine dreamed of a place that could see “everything from opera to the Russian circus.” When the $46 million Ordway Performing Arts Center opened in 1985, Ordway put in $7.5 million. One of the leading non-profit performing arts centers in the United States, the center is home to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Opera. The program of the center with two exhibition halls includes theater, dance, music and educational programs. The 2019 line-up includes Boyz II Men, Monty Python’s Spamalot and Shen Yun, an orchestral and dance show celebrating the disappearing Chinese culture.
When construction began on the Hampton Coliseum in 1968, its architects were among the first to recognize the area’s potential for commercial development. The arena, named after the Roman arena, has brought many high-rise hotels, malls and department stores. Almost the height of a football field, the Colosseum now hosts celebrity musical guests and events that draw tens of thousands of people. The 2019 program includes Disney on Ice, Monster Jam and the 52nd annual Hampton Jazz Festival, which runs from the 28th to the 30th. June.

The original Municipal Auditorium and Gayard Exhibition Hall opened in 1968 under the direction of then-Charleston mayor John Palmer Gayard, Jr. As the city’s largest performing arts venue, it was Gaillard’s feat and hosted the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Spoleto Festival. USA, a national performing arts festival that has since expanded to other venues throughout the city. From 2012 to 2015, a new $142 million Gaillard Center was built to house the orchestra, which now includes an 1,800-seat auditorium, a 15,000-square-foot gallery, and three floors of city offices. The 2019 program includes a range of Broadway shows, music and dance performances, and family programs, including the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra, Cinderella by Rodgers and Hammerstein and a performance by David Sedaris.
In 1957, the then president of Arizona State University hired internationally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design the Gammage Auditorium. Wright’s plans for an opera house in Baghdad, Iraq failed, so he adapted plans for the ASU campus. One of its most notable features is that there are 3,000 seats in the auditorium, none of which is more than 115 feet from the stage. The hall’s main attractions are Broadway tours and musicians, while the ASU Kerr Cultural Center program calls for performances that highlight underrepresented voices. The 2019 program includes the third installment of Silent Voices: LOVESTATE, a spoken word piece conceived, produced and performed by the Brooklyn Youth Choir, and Native Nation, a theatrical performance celebrating the experience of indigenous peoples.
Tennessee theater exudes worldly influences. When the theater opened in 1928, critics called it “the most beautiful theater in the South.” Hispano-Moorish interiors feature French chandeliers adorned with Czechoslovakian crystals, Italian mosaic floors, Asian carpets and fabrics. The site originally served as a single-screen movie theater, but after broadcasting pioneer James A. Dick bought it in 1981, Tennessee has evolved into a multipurpose performing arts center. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Opera and other local organizations regularly use the space, as well as for touring concerts. Musicians Young the Giant, Casey Musgraves and Willie Nelson & Family are among the guests scheduled for 2019.

The Writers’ Theater opened its first venue in 1992 in the North Shore neighborhood of Chicago, and a second venue, Tudor Court, opened about ten years later. Tudor Court’s main attraction was only 108 seats. So when the Writers Theater moved to Glencoe and built a permanent home in 2016, award-winning Studio Gang Architects made sure to keep the new space intimate. In 2019, the Writer’s Theater will feature popular plays including August Wilson’s Next to Normal and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
When the Philadelphia Orchestra showed interest in the new home, and Edward J. Rendell, mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 2000, insisted that it house the city’s best artists and touring companies, the ideas came together. In 1996 construction began, and in 2001 the 2,547-seat Verizon Hall Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts opened. The auditorium itself, built specifically for the Philadelphia Orchestra, is cello-shaped and includes a motorized canopy system and banners that allow performers to adjust the space visually and acoustically. In addition to the band’s many performances, Verizon Hall hosts jazz musicians, dance bands, and social justice and political policy experts.
The German building materials company Emporis named the Kaufmann Center for the Performing Arts one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world.

The Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts is home to the Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Lyric Opera, and the Kansas City Symphony, and hosts other local and international programs. The $316 million center, consisting of two performance venues connected by a glass auditorium with panoramic city views, opened in 2011. The hall has an auditorium with 1600 seats and a theater with 1800 seats inspired by traditional European opera. It was designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, best known for designing Habitat 67, a brutalist residential complex that debuted at the Montreal World’s Fair.
