Six bands from the Boston area will rock the crowd! The celebration also includes a silent auction, affordable dinner options (including BBQ!), a cash bar, and activities for kids.

All proceeds from Let’s Rock n’ Roll will benefit the Plugged In Scholarship Fund and the Inclusive Program. Last year, Plugged In awarded 60 scholarships and raised nearly $75,000 in additional plug-in program costs.

The Plugged In Band Program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Needham. For over 20 years, Plugged In has given young people the opportunity to belong in a welcoming, supportive music community. Each year, 300 school-aged students learn to be part of a rock band in a non-competitive and inclusive environment. No student is ever turned away, regardless of their ability to pay, learning profile, disability or musical background. Plugged In organizes groups and provides training space as well as experienced adult instructors. Students also learn the importance of giving back to the community by performing concerts that benefit charities of the students’ choice. Congratulations! You lived through the greatest era of music. From Joni Mitchell to Frank Zappa to Jimi Hendrix, nothing today compares to the brilliance seen in this inspirational decade. Good thing there’s proof in live footage and photos. Woodstock is one of the most famous and legendary festivals of all time – and for good reason. The three-day festival (over four days) was held on a dairy farm (Max Jasgur’s farm) in upstate New York and attracted approximately 400,000 people. 32 performances were performed outside the venue and included some of the world’s biggest musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who. Canadian icon Joni Mitchell was unable to attend the festival because her manager wanted her to be “fresh” for her upcoming appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. He later wrote the hit song “Woodstock” based on his boyfriend Graham Nash’s experience of the incident. “I’m going camping on the ground.” I will try to “free my soul”.

The Monterey Pop Festival was held in 1967 (two years before Woodstock) at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. The festival was supposed to embody the spirit of California at a time when the counterculture was reviving, and so was the concept of the Summer of Love. Although the festival’s capacity was set at 7,000 people, about 8,500 people attended to see the first major American performances of Jimi Hendrix and Ravi Shankar. With the exception of Ravi Shankar, who was paid $3,000 for his incredible sitar performance in the afternoon, the artists performed for free and donated all proceeds to charity. The festival is also famous for Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on stage during a set (see above).
At the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Bob Dylan famously took the stage with a Fender Stratocaster and played his first rock ‘n’ roll set. The electric version of “Maggie’s Farm” was immediately met with boos and screams from at least some fans, but some of the boos were said to be in response to the poor sound quality of the evening’s event. . The historic event is now popularly called the Electric Dylan Controversy. Witnesses at the time suggested that the audience’s reaction was mostly enthusiastic, and Dylan was also noted to be backed by electric guitarist Mike Bloomfield and members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The Plugged set marked a shift in artistic direction for the folk artist and continued to elevate his status in the burgeoning counterculture.
December 6, 1969 Altamont Speedway Free Festival, a counterculture era rock concert featuring artists/bands from Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Rolling Stones to name a few. The festival is best known for violence and property damage, and was called “the worst day of rock and roll of all time” by the staff of Rolling Stone magazine. Many hoped it would be the Woodstock of the west, but as the festival began, it became clear there was nothing quieter than Casgur’s farm. According to Grace Slick, “The vibrations were bad. Something was very strange, not particularly bad, but really strange. It was such a foggy, abrasive and uncertain day. I was waiting for Woodstock’s friendly vibe, but it wasn’t coming. This was a completely different thing.”

The 1970 Isle of Wight Music Festival was the last of three music festivals held on the island between 1968 and 1970. According to the Guinness Book of Records, 700,000 – more than Woodstock! The line-up of artists performing was around 50 and included Canadian giants Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, as well as Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues, Emerson, Lake and Palmer among many others. The Who also played the festival in 1969 and 1970 – the shows were part of their Tommy Tour and focused on their concept album of the same name. Together with a 35mm film crew, future Oscar-winning director Murray Lerner filmed the iconic festival, which was later made into a film called Message of Love: Isle of Wight Festival: The Movie. A photo essay on the festivals was published by the Guardian and acts as a time capsule that transports you to another time and place. Music festivals are still held on the Isle of Wight, but we sincerely doubt they are as prominent as their predecessors.
You may have seen, or at least heard of, the 2003 documentary Festival Express. The film includes live footage from the eponymous train tour in 1970, footage from concerts to train footage showing non-stop jam sessions and parties. The train tour featured some of North America’s biggest rock bands, including The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Buddy Guy, Flying Burrito Brothers, and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, and took place in Canada. Express Festival took place in three Canadian cities during the summer months: Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary. Instead of using a private jet to get to each destination, the musicians traveled by Canadian National Railways charter train – and they did it very well. Now that’s a train we want! Too many!

Previously, in the history of my blog, I wrote about different countries and the rock music of the 60s and 70s from there. One of my goals was to write about rock music from all over Europe and I want to start again this year. Why are we talking about continental Europe? Simply put, if the music isn’t in English, it won’t get radio airplay in America, and probably not in the UK either. I think people should not be limited to listening to music in their own language. People in other countries outside the Anglosphere listen to music in English whether they understand the lyrics or not, so why can’t we do the same with music in other languages? Music from other countries can be hard to find, so the goal is to share the best rock music from around the world, bring it to you, and give you my recommendations and see what I can learn.
