Music Artist Elevator Pitch Examples – With no audio to worry about and only four minutes to fill, music video production is one of the most affordable ways for filmmakers and videographers to expand their creative horizons and get paid. To secure the music video job, your potential client will first expect an outline of your idea, known as a “treatment.” Here’s a guide to what to include and how to make your treatments stand out to people.
So you’ve opened a dialogue with an artist looking for a music video. This could be by contacting them directly through social media, word of mouth, or through a website designed to bring creatives and artists together, such as Creative Commissions. Once contact is made, that’s when a treatment should be combined. Even the biggest videos of artists from Bruno Mars to Adele start with a video treatment.

We’ll get to the content of the treatment shortly, but it will all come from an inspired idea that will relate to your client’s work. I keep a running list of music video ideas in my Omnifocus app, which I add to whenever inspiration strikes, wherever it may be. For me, this often comes from watching great film and television.
How To Prepare The Perfect Elevator Pitch
Do your homework on the artist if you don’t already know them, watch their previous videos, listen to their music, find out who inspires them, and then watch their videos. This background assignment will help you decide which idea to pull from your idea bank. An urban rap artist is unlikely to be impressed with a treatment referenced in a Dolly Parton video, so it’s important to shape your idea to the client.
If the artist is looking for a video that contains a lot of VFX that isn’t your skill set, you need to set the stage with a partner to cover this or you could be setting yourself up for failure. Writing any treatment takes time, and time is money for full-time creatives. While you have to be prepared for some of your treatments to fail, you have to pick and choose the projects that you think you can do a great job on. Rap music isn’t something I listen to often, it’s not a genre I feel confident shooting for my limited exposure. That’s why I don’t often write rap treatments, I prefer to spend my time writing indie, rock and pop treatments.
The problem with video references, especially music videos, is that the video content is often not flagged for search engines. To illustrate what I mean here, let’s look at Black Keys – The Weight of Love. It’s a beautiful narrative video about a crazy, alternative female cult. Now, try searching for “female cult music video” on YouTube and the Black Keys video is nowhere to be seen.
Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch
This means you have to rely on your own knowledge of references, and the only way to build that is to take some time out of your week to watch new video content. Vimeo Staff Picks is always a great place to start. Take note of the cinematography that inspires you and use it as a basis for your reference. This turns downtime in front of the TV into important research for potential projects.
My treatments follow the same format and preparing a template is the easiest way to speed up the process. I use PowerPoint and export to PDF when sharing. Each treatment includes a page with the artist name, song title and my logo.
The second page is a summary (or elevator pitch) of the idea for the music video, broken down into short bullet points along with key visual references which are often screenshots of the referenced videos.

The next section will break down the concept into the different scenes it would take. For example, I would have a slide that describes the artist’s performance, a slide that describes a narrative part of the video, and a slide that describes the B-roll and cutaway footage. This section can only be a slide if it is a purely performance based video, the key is to be clear and careful with your idea.
The next section is to show a tone and style used to tie the content together. This could be a certain style of transition, maybe you see the video with a soft dreamlike overlay, or maybe your grade will have muted, cinematic colors.
Although it is difficult to capture something truly original, the style of your video content brings originality to the project. Modern NLE editors like Premiere Pro are extremely powerful for combining experimental styles and looks, so have a game and if you have a strong and original style, please share it in this section with a link to a short video at Vimeo you have uploaded with stock footage.

The last page is always saved for video reference. While the treatment includes reference screenshots and some links, I often collect all the references I used in this section. Visual references are much stronger than written description, so take some time to find the right references, with a brief description of what is in the reference you are pointing to? If it’s Kendrick Lamar – Okay, you’re referring, is it the black and white film grade, the awesome car scenes, or the urban scenes you’re referring to?
Never lose sight of the end goal when combining your treatments. You want to convey your idea to the client in a way that inspires them to work with you because of your creativity and your credibility. By being specific and careful with your treatment, clients will feel more confident in your ability to take your idea from paper to video.
Focusing narrowly on your idea with your treatment instead of painting with big strokes will be better accepted by the potential client. Let’s say you like the idea of the main character in the video running away from someone. Instead of just saying “the character scene is leaving”, be more specific. “Character sprints away from a chaser, ahead on shot, Steadicam like in the opening scene of Trainspotting” with a frame of this scene in Trainspotting will be much stronger.

The last piece of advice I can give is to stick with it. You’ll probably lose more seats than you’ll gain in the beginning, but ask for feedback, keep building a body of work to reference, and remember that you can recycle unrecorded treatments. Each one will take time, so for each heal not used, time can be saved to make one in the future.

It is a sentence that can be delivered orally or in a single written page of text in about 60 seconds. The term is standard in marketing. A great elevator pitch that novelists can use to sell their novels should have at least the following 5 features:
Brevity (saying as much as possible in as few words as possible) is always important in writing style, because if you don’t waffle, you give maximum value to the reader. This rule applies to both fiction writing and advertising communications. Especially the latter, because when a reader sits down to read a book, publishers are busy people who take many positions.

Your elevator pitch needs a compelling hook or it won’t stand out in a sea of pitches. Make it interesting:
Great stories pose interesting problems (like “What if a man was the last man on earth?” or “What if there was a portal leading to another world where society and power are shaped very differently?” )
The best elevator pitch novelists can create is one that clarifies a story’s central problem and ultimate resolution. On the “problematic” part of the field:

The simple truth is that publishers work in a world where it’s increasingly difficult to make good money without a lot of effort. Thus, it reduces the number of points that publishers have to mark because it makes your display more attractive. Make your elevator pitch identify your target audience or market (and why your story appeals to them) in as few words as possible.
It is recommended that you keep your story summary separate from the details of your target market, as this allows the recipient to digest your main idea without other distractions. It’s a good idea to just put “Target Audience” as one of the subheadings under your headings, specifying the word count and genre. This includes showing the publisher or small publisher that you have thought carefully about where your book fits into the full market. State the approximate reading age group and interest categories (e.g. nonfiction readers
