Fiction, on the other hand, allows students’ creativity to shine! Many students find it stimulating and interesting to be allowed to write stories of their own making.

Today, I’m sharing 5 tips for teaching essay writing, along with my outline and essay writing resources. It’s a writing section that has everything you need to bring story writing to your preschool, first grade, or second grade school!

Before you ask your students to write in a style that is new to them, you must first immerse them in it. So, to start your group, you’ll want to share an example of writing a story with your students. These essays provide students with examples of good storytelling.

As you read them aloud, highlight how the author organizes their text. Identify the author’s purpose, theme, agenda, and author’s influence. All of this will help students better understand the type of writing we are asking them to do.

Second, is it easy for your students to understand? And finally, does it fit the type of writing you teach? If you answered “Yes!” and three, then you’re good to go!

When you plan to write your own story, I suggest you use the experiences you shared as a class. It can be as simple as a short walk outside of school, a field trip you went on, or a class celebration you had. Show your students that stories don’t have to be about big events. A moment, like a walk in the fresh air, can be stretched into a large piece of newspaper!

Then figure out how to organize your text using a graphic organizer. Make it clear that you have a topic, use tenses to frame your action, outline and closing sentences. Don’t be afraid to throw events out of order! Let the students see the mistake and help you correct it!

Finally, read your work out loud again to make sure it makes sense and that the activities are in the right order. Check for silly mistakes and come up with the right name!

You want your students to know that when they write a novel, they write a story to make the reader happy. It can be a real story about yourself from your life or a fictional story. Creating an anchor box with this information helps remind students of the writing purpose.

When writing fiction, an anchor chart of sentence starters can help students get story ideas.

Finally, you’ll want to create an anchor chart using the script you’re copying. This would be another example of good storytelling. As a class, add tags to identify titles, topics, keywords, definitions, and closing sentences in your shared text.

These anchor charts can be printed in your text frame. Encourage your students to refer to them and use them as support as they write each other.

Provide a good checklist in the writing area. For article writing, you’ll want checklists to include things like “does my article have a title?” “Is there a clear beginning, middle and end?” “Did I speak for a moment?” and a reminder to check for typos, typos, and punctuation.

You can also create custom essays. Figure out how to use it to evaluate your own work and how to use it to give feedback to others.

Give students a chance to share their writing with others! Pair students with partners and let them read to each other. Encourage them to provide feedback using the editing notes and rubric as a guide.

As with all things, writing is about doing! Students need dedicated instructional time to learn the skills and strategies necessary to become effective writers, as well as time to practice what they learn.
