Stewart was 42 years old when he died 20 years ago on October 25, 1999 in a plane crash in Mina, South Dakota. From his home in Orlando, Florida, Stewart traveled to Texas for the Tour Championship.

Agents Robert Fraley and Van Arden, golf course designer Bruce Borland, 42-year-old pilot Michael Kling and 27-year-old first officer Stephanie Belgarig were also killed in the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the plane failed to pressurize, resulting in passengers and crew incapacitated by hypoxia. The plane flew on autopilot until it ran out of gas and crashed.
According to the World Golf Hall of Fame, Stewart started playing golf at the age of 4. In 1982, he earned a PGA Tour card.

Later in the day, he was called to the school office at First Academy … he was driven home by Johnny, the next-door neighbor, who did not turn on the car radio because he was afraid that Aaron and Chelsea would hear the news … Chelsea gasped for a truck. He saw the TV on the street … Continued His mother met them at the door and took them upstairs to their mother and father’s room and told them that their father would not be coming home.
Then he screamed and cried and hugged. And mother, daughter and son slept in the bed of mother and father that night.
In a letter Chelsea wrote to her father on the 20th anniversary of her father’s death, she recalls struggling to sleep that terrible night.

“I slept with the pillow you used for your neck pain,” Chelsea wrote to her father. It smelled like you, and that smell helped me sleep that night and many nights. I clung to that pillow and smelled you as long as I could…hard to believe it’s been 20 years. People say time heals everything. It hurts, but I can’t believe it. Sure, over the years, I learned how to manage the sadness of losing you, but the pain never goes away. I think of you every day. I miss you every day.
