Why the plane was allowed to fly in the first place has remained a mystery since the devastating crash nearly two decades ago.
But in her upcoming book, Baby Girl: Known As Aaliyah, music journalist Cathy Yandoli believes the truth has finally been revealed.
Aaliyah, a notoriously nervous flyer, was initially believed to have insisted on getting back on the plane to Miami.

However, as The Daily Beast first reported, a Bahamian man who was with the pop star moments before her death claims that’s not the case.
Kingsley Russell, who was 13 at the time, was working in his family’s taxi and hospitality business when the singer was asked to work as a doorman.
Russell’s mother was Aaliyah’s driver while she was on the island and said she spoke to the star on the way to the airport.
Years After Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash, Tragedy Still Fresh For Survivor
According to Russell, the plane arrived at the airport two hours late. When Aaliya saw the size of the plane, she refused to get on it, she explains in the book.
At the same time, his entourage argued with the pilot after he told him that the plane was carrying eight passengers and their luggage was too heavy.
Aaliyah was filming her latest music video ‘Rock The Boat’ on a tropical island and her entourage was carrying heavy camera gear.

“[The airport staff] and Aaliyah had a reasonable idea that the plane was overweight,” Russell says in the book, Predator reports.
The 22-year-old woman said she had a headache, got back into the taxi and sat in the back seat for a quick nap.
During the exchange, Russell says the singer reiterated that she didn’t want to get on the small plane and that she wasn’t feeling well.

A team member then gave Aaliyah a pill, Russell said, which she took until she fell into a “deep sleep.”
Aaliya was apparently still asleep when the pilot finally relented and allowed her and her team to fly to Florida.
“They took him out of the van; he didn’t even know he was getting on a plane,” Russell says in the book. “He slept on the plane.”

The flight took off at 6.50pm but only climbed 60-100 feet to the ground.
One of these passengers was the singer’s bodyguard. He reportedly spent his final moments worrying about Aaliyah’s condition, officials later said.
Aaliya’s body was found 20 meters away from the wreckage. He fell on his left side, still tied to the chair.
Country Singers Who Died Too Soon
According to the coroner’s report, his survival was “unthinkable” due to the extensive burns and severe head injuries he suffered.
“The story was that he was determined to get on the plane. I almost felt bad for him. Why did you want to get on that plane so badly?”
“I think it’s closed for us knowing that he didn’t want to get on the plane for people like me and many others.

“It’s a sad closing … but I needed to hear that I didn’t want to get on the plane; I needed to know.”
“The man I thought was the smartest man in the world had the sense not to get on the plane.
“The fact that he was so determined, that he stayed in the taxi and refused, that’s something we never knew.”

“The only thing I take with me is that after 20 years, I can finally say that Aaliyah doesn’t want to get on a plane anymore,” Iandoli continued.
“It makes me feel a little better, but not that much. It shouldn’t have happened. He still has to be here, and I think that’s the saddest thing about him. He deserved better.”
