This type of writing is used to tell a story, regardless of whether the story is fictional or based on facts, narrative writing will still be used. It is thought that this type of writing is one of the most difficult to master but when done correctly it makes reading very easy. Narrative writing requires the author to draw the audience into the story through the use of words.
Narrative writing usually has a network of characters and is often written in first-person narrative, where the story is told from one person’s point of view, although more can be done. The narrative text will also always have a beginning, middle and end.

This is an example of narrative writing, taken from the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, written by JK Rowling.
Silhouetted against the golden moon, which grew larger by the second, was a large, strangely angled creature, heading towards Harry. He stood still and watched it sink further. For a moment he hesitated with his hand on the window latch, deciding whether to close it, but the strange creature flew above the lights of Privet Drive, and then Harry, who had realized what it was, jumped aside.
This is a writing style used to explain something to the reader. Expository writing is often found in textbooks and is always based on facts and information. The writer’s personal opinion or feelings cannot be mentioned in this style of writing. You may also see this type of writing in cookbooks, newspaper articles, or editorial work. Let’s look at a quote from the British press to demonstrate this.

Descriptive writing is a style that allows the author to describe something, it could be a person, place, object or situation. The language in descriptive writing will appeal to the senses, with the writer detailing the appearance, smell, sound of things, etc.
You’ll often find this type of writing in stories, but it can also be seen in things like poetry or journal writing. Let’s look at an example taken from the Jamaica Inn Daphne Du Marier.

In addition to the four main types of writing, there are four other types of writing that are important to know. Let’s take a brief look at each of them.
In the English language, there are four different types of writing, however, there are also four less common but certainly important subtypes of writing. The type of writing you use will largely depend on the type of text you are writing and each will bring its own unique quality to the piece. Script, serif, sans serif? Fonts, styles, and families can be quite difficult to understand. But to develop our own unique calligraphy alphabet, we first need to understand the different families and styles that form the basis and backbone of all alphabets.
There are almost infinite ways to create variations of the 23 letters of the alphabet, some of which may be more elaborate than others.

But to create variation, develop your own style AND make sure your letters are well-formed and legible, there are some parameters that need to be constant.
We also need to know the family of origin of each style, so that we can keep the identifying characteristics intact so that they are known as its letters.
