Remember the good old days when guitar amps were turned up to 11 and the louder you went the better you thought? Fast forward to today, and 60% of active musicians experience some form of hearing loss – four times the rate of the general population. In-ear monitors (also commonly referred to as “IEMs”) were introduced for two reasons – to recognize your ears and to give you a better mix than any stage speaker could.

Most universal in-ear monitors do both of these things reasonably well, with options starting around $50. For superior isolation and audio performance, however, musicians have historically turned to full-shell custom in-ear monitors—custom molded-to-order Call to the ears of the user. These usually start around $400-500, and go into the $2000 range and beyond. Custom in-ears are considered the holy grail for musicians, but have historically been so expensive that many musicians have completely forgotten about hearing aids on stage, especially when they first started out.

That really depends on how much you get out of them, what you use them for, and of course your budget.
If you only use them for weekend performances, but the volume is so loud that your ears ring for days afterwards, a less expensive in-ear monitor with a custom tip would be the best choice – it will give you the highest sound. Isolation for your money, while still giving you all the benefits of using IEMs.
If you use them to practice on an electronic drum kit, or mix/master recording, for several hours every day, the sound quality can fall into comfort and isolation. In this case, a high-end universal-fit model may be the way to go. If you get our MX series, you can always upgrade to a custom fit later.

Making your mark may cause injury and potential risk of deafness. It is recommended to find an audiologist to make the impressions professionally. If you want to make your own, make sure earplugs are used.
It is recommended to have a smoke distance of 5mm for the tweeter and 7mm for the woofer as a starting point.
I got my impressions from an audiologist because the risk and cost of doing the impressions myself is not worth it and my ears are relatively small. But anyway, here’s a guide to impressions from Singapore-based CIEM company AAW. The images are by AAW and I do not own any of them.

I used a rotary tool and a blade to make my ear impressions. Make sure the other surface is flat.
After shaping it, clean it and you can test the fit by putting it back in your ear.

Start by heating paraffin wax in a small tin until it is liquid and dip the print for a few seconds and let it dry, then repeat with a total of two light coats. (Or just one or completely excluded depending on preference) This is just to ensure a smooth surface, if it is too thick it may hurt or not fit properly.
Place the seal in the center. Heat the silicone to temperature (varies between types, some use a mixture of two parts to make the silicone mold). Pour in the silicone slowly to avoid bubbles. Let it set and harden

Begin pouring UV resin into the negative mold (colloid). Place a black cover over the top to restrict UV light from streaming in, as you only want to cure the sides, creating an empty shell.

Continue by covering it with a faceplate (wood, vinyl, metals etc.) or do a layer of UV resin on a piece of glass or non-stick paper and place it on the shell and attach it with more UV resin and to heal. Cut off the excess and cut down the whole shell. Followed by a layer of UV varnish and rotate the shell as it cures.
