The only version of Edvard Munch’s painting still in private hands will lead sales at New York’s Sotheby’s in May as the big-name market shows no signs of slowing down.

Philip Hook, senior impressionist and modern art specialist at Sotheby’s, said: “This is one of the most important pieces of modern art we’ve ever sold.”
Sotheby’s believes The Scream is second only to the Mona Lisa as one of the world’s most famous works of art, and says it influenced Andy Warhol and The Simpsons.
Munch painted this version of The Scream in 1895 as the centerpiece of the Frieze of Life series. An expert on the photo said: “He looks great in fantasy. The sound might not seem that surprising or scary these days, but at the time it was.

Sotheby’s said it was difficult to value the painting because it was rare for “authentic paintings” to hit the market. A recent sale of art at the auction house “suggests the price could exceed $80 million.” Sotheby’s currently holds the record for a Munch sale when the work Vampire was purchased in New York for $38.1 million in 2008.
The art market this year has lifted the gloom over the wider economy. In a series of auctions in London, works by the likes of Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter and Mark Rothko fetched tens of millions of pounds.
This comes after the Emirate of Qatar paid a world record $250 million to buy Cezanne’s The Card Players in a private sale. A sales expert said buyers from the Middle East are likely to factor into the bidding for The Scream. “They have a lot of museums and they try to fill them with high quality pieces,” said the expert.

Munch completed four versions of the work. Three of them are in Norwegian museums. The piece for sale belongs to Petter Olsen, whose father Thomas was a friend and supporter of the artist. The 1893 version and the 1910 version were both stolen from various Norwegian museums, but both were recovered and remain on display.
Mr Hook said: “It speaks to the fear and alienation of modern society. It’s the image that started a thousand doctors.” This version is stronger than the others and has a poem on the frame painted by an artist.
Petter Olsen said: “I have lived with this work all my life and its strength and power has only increased over time. However, now I feel that the time has come to give the whole world the opportunity to experience this wonderful work to be and appreciate.”

The Norwegian businessman said the money would build a new museum, art center and hotel on his farm, which would open next year to mark Munch’s 150th birthday.
A major exhibition of the artist’s work will open in the UK later this year when Edvard Munch: The Modern Eye opens at the Tate Modern in June.
The sale of Sotheby’s gives The Scream the opportunity to leave Norwegian ownership for the first time – the other three versions are all owned by local museums. Munch painted a large copy of the expression work in 1893, which hangs in the National Gallery in Norway.

In 1994, the year Norway hosted the Winter Olympics, thieves stole an 1893 painting from the National Gallery. After a painful operation, it was brought back in the same year. Ten years later, masked weapons steeled the 1910 version. Two years later, it was restored.
