Last week, the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum debuted “Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock,” an expansive look at the influential movement of Southern California artists led by -country, bluegrass and folk- influence. Hit-making acts at the center of the “Western Edge” include the Byrds, Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco, Dwight Yoakam and more.
“We looked at other cities, but never focused on this particular story,” said Michael Gray, co-curator of “Western Edge” and senior executive director of editorial and interpretation at the Country Music Hall of Fame, “what happened in Los Angeles with country – rock.”
After consolidating the idea for “Western Edge” in late 2019, co-curators Gray and Michael McCall conducted approximately 40 hours of interviews from 23 subjects to construct a linear story. The exhibit focuses heavily on taking visitors through the music of the late 1950s—such as the bluegrass groups The Dillards and The Kentucky Colonels—to Yoakam and the Desert Rose Band in the 80s.
Interesting Facts About The Country Music Hall Of Fame
And the country rock legacy of longtime musician Chris Hillman is at the metaphorical center of “Western Edge.” His musical fingerprints cover most of the exhibit, starting with Hillman’s time in the early 1960s bluegrass outfit Scottsville Squirrel Barkers to co-founding The Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Desert Rose Band, among others.
“It’s a fusion of styles,” Hillman told The . “It was a vital part of the landscape, musically.”
And what influence did many of these musicians have? A youthful love of the country and bluegrass tradition, Gray said.
The Ultimate Nashville Country Music Travel Guide
“Almost all of these bands, they really started as young people who loved bluegrass, folk or country,” Gray said. “How hit rock ‘n’ roll—especially the Beatles’ influence and [Bob] Dylan—became rock musicians, but they found ways to bring in the traditional elements. All of a sudden, banjos and fiddles and pedal steel guitars are all about late ’60s synth rock records and the early 70s.
This is some of the most pop music in the world at the time, and it has all these country elements.”

Visitor’s Guide & History Of The Country Music Hall Of Fame
McCall, senior editor at the Country Music Hall of Fame, added, “None of them tried to make country hits until Emmylou [Harris]. They all made rock music, but they had a country influence to it. Our job is to look at the history of country music and show that this is an important time for how country influenced rock ‘n’ roll.”
Through floor-to-ceiling displays and interactive playlists, “Western Edge” curators show visitors how musicians in the Los Angeles country rock scene engaged in songwriting collaborations, supergroups and touring band members. For example, members of the Eagles once supported Ronstadt; and before or after their time in the Eagles, the band members also logged time in Poco, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Longbrach/Pennywhistle and Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band, to name a few.
“The musicians obviously interacted with each other. They wrote songs with each other. Different groups performed with each other,” Hillman said. “It was also a big factor in the development of the music, the cross-interaction and gameplay.”

And in the eighties, a new genre began to cross paths with country rock: Punk. Los Lobos shared stage time with innovative British punk outfit The Clash and Yoakam cut his teeth in clubs played by Black Flag and The Ramones.
“They took it back to the roots and removed it,” McCall said. “In the ’80s, influenced by what was going on, they played it faster.”
Today, country rock is largely recognizable by another name: Americana, a format Hillman and company pioneered decades before it became a catch-all phrase for roots, folk, soul and country rock.

“Thank God for the term ‘Americana,’ as it swallowed up ‘country-rock,'” Hillman said. “It’s all Americana now. And it’s rootsy, which is really nice. I hear some of these smaller acoustic bands out there, and they’re phenomenal. Phenomenal actors and singers. Everything just grows and grows and grows.” The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN, is one of the largest museums and research centers in the world dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of American folk music.
