The leader of the popular band disappeared on the English Channel in 1944. on December 15 as a passenger in a single-engine UC-64-A Norseman. Remembered in Don McLean’s song “American Pie” as “The Day the Music Died”, 1959. February 3 Beechcraft Bonanza crash kills 22 year old Buddy Holly (Peggy Sue) Ritchie Valens. (17) and J.P. Shortly after taking off from the airport in Clear Lake, Iowa, en route to Fargo, North Dakota, for a show in nearby Moorhead, Minnesota, the single-engine plane encountered bad weather and crashed in corn field. All on board, including pilot Roger Peterson, 21, were killed. Valens, whose biggest hit was La Bamba, boarded the plane after winning a coin with guitarist Tommy Allsup. Waylon Jennings, then a member of Holly’s band, gave in to an ill Richardson. The investigation blamed the pilot, Peterson, who was not prepared for the weather he encountered during the flight.

30-year-old country singer Patsy Cline and three others died in the 1963 Piper Comanche crash. March 5 Cline returned to his home in Nashville, Tennessee after a performance in Kansas City, Kansas. The pilot was her manager, Ramsey “Randy” Dorris Hughes. Bad weather made the journey difficult and forced several stops. After taking off from Dyersburg, Tennessee, in rain, clouds and overcast skies, the plane crashed in a rural area about 75 miles west of Nashville. Cline, Hughes and musicians Harold Franklin “Hankshaw” Hawkins and Llody Estel “Cowboy” Cop were killed. Crash investigators blamed pilot error.
Country singer Jim Reeves, 40, died in a crash similar to Cline’s, except that Reeves was flying his plane. The singer, known for hits like “Four Walls”, in 1964. July 31 left Batesville, Arkansas to fly to Nashville. Reeves was at the controls of his single-engine Beechcraft 35-B33 Debonair. His only passenger was his manager, Dean Manuel. Reeves took off in a heavy storm over Brentwood, Tennessee, and apparently became disoriented. The plane fell to the ground at high speed. The search, which included country stars Marty Robbins and Ernest Tubb, took 42 hours to find the remains.
