Canyon Lodge and Cabins is an all-purpose Yellowstone lodge with over 500 rooms and suites. On the east side of the park near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Canyon Lodge is open from mid-May to early October. In 2016, a two-year lodge renovation was completed, resulting in 5 new lodges and a total of 400 guest rooms including 2 Bedroom Suites, Superior Lodge Rooms and Standard Lodge Rooms. All 5 new residences are LEED Certified. The main public building housing the restaurant and souvenir shop was renovated and reopened in 2017.

The Canyon Lodge complex you see today is the second Lodge built in the area. The original Canyon Lodge is also located just down the road, adjacent to the Canyon, and was built on the site of the former Shaw & Powell Camping Co. (similar to other lodges in the Park). Today’s Canyon Village began with Mission 66, which sought to restore the Park’s main road and create a parking lot as a means of transportation. As noted, however, by the end of its life, much had changed to make the Canyon Hotel permanent. In fact, in addition to the construction of the Canyon Village (suitable for traffic), visitors find that the foundations of the Hotel are in a bad state of disrepair. Officials closed the hotel in 1958.
But it was never dropped. For some reason, the Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1960. That was the end of a building praised for its “compassion and skillful cultivation of this environment.”
Fast forward to the early 1990s, when two new buildings were built to supplement the existing rooms, which were beginning to show their age. The first, Cascade Lodge, came in 1992. Dunraven Lodge followed in 1998. For a short time, before Old Faithful Snow Lodge was built, this was the newest lodge in Yellowstone National Park.

Again, however, Canyon has surpassed Old Faithful again, although it borrows, in part, from the Snow Lodge model. In fact, the new Canyon Lodge places a greater emphasis on recycled materials than the snow lodge, which takes most of its materials from the Park’s previous avalanche lodge.
For example, the wood in all the rooms (along with the trim) comes from pine trees killed by the mountain pine beetle, while the table tops are made from fly ash (a byproduct of burning coal) and recycled glass. Additionally, Xanterra hopes the new residence will receive a LEED (“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”) rating from the US Green Building Council.
With the construction of its new lodge (complete and pending), Canyon Village will be the largest hotel in Yellowstone National Park.
