“I’m really happy to see people from all countries, not just Iranians — we have Ukrainians, we have Canadians,” said Ray Taheri, a UBCO professor and protest organizer. “It’s not just about a region, it’s about a regime like the Iranian [government] that can threaten the entire planet. It’s racial, gender, political racism.”
Taheri explained that the Iranian government considers anyone who opposes them to be anti-God. Taheri said that over the past seven or eight weeks, in Sahedan, Iran, the regime has massacred a group of people who supported the Iranian revolution. Even if it does, the government does not take any responsibility for it.
“The regime continues to execute people. I don’t think the word execution is right, it’s political murder,” Taheri said. “It shows how irrational and corrupt they are and the extent of their human rights abuses.”

Taheri explained that Sunday was an important day for the Iranian revolution around the world. Because the EU will decide whether to define the regime as a terrorist organization. If that happens, all assets of the regime and its leaders should be frozen and confiscated.
“This has had a major impact on human rights abuses and the continued existence of the Iranian regime,” Taheri said.
Saturday’s event in Kelowna took place in front of the gallery, two Canadian-Iranian artists, Reihan Yastani and Nasim Birhadi, who had held art exhibitions at the facility earlier in the day. Birhati is from Kelowna and studied at UBC Okanagan.
Art Of The Global Protest: Iran 2022
“Their support for this event has been tremendous,” Taheri said. It is very sad that for more than 43 years in Iran, women have not been able to sing and dance openly in their own country and in their own language.
Yazdani and Pirhadi’s exhibit, “We Are Countless,” is on view at the Kelowna Art Museum from January 21 through April 16.
