Launching Inauguration Day: 100 Artists, 100 Days
Founder and CEO Su Hyun Kim has experience in international development, having worked in this field for over 13 years (UNICEF, Interamerican Development Bank and World Bank). She has worked mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean – providing business analysis and technical advice to small and medium-sized companies. Meanwhile, during numerous business trips, she made an exciting discovery. Every time the group went on tour, at least one person bought a painting from a local gallery to take home. “The art here is different from what I can find at home” would always be the answer. The different styles – from surrealism, magical realism, geometry, abstract expressionism and many others – and the joy of experiencing a new culture through painting seem to have fascinated her colleagues. So the idea came up: why not give this option to people who don’t necessarily travel that often?
That’s how Arte Original was born in 2019. The pandemic has been a challenge and a focal point for the online gallery, but they are moving forward stronger than ever. Currently, the gallery represents over 120 artists from 7 Latin American countries. Not only do they have exhibitions in the Washington, DC area, but they also had a successful exhibition in Seoul, South Korea in 2021 where they partnered with a Korean gallery to present Venezuelan artist Jorge Contreras.
What are their most precious moments? When a deep emotional connection occurs between the story of the artist and the collector. When someone walks past a picture of a woman with a dreamy face and colors exploding from her insides and begins to cry uncontrollably in front of the picture, a nerve deep in that person is touched. The connection that a work of art can create, bridging thousands and millions of miles of distance, is a powerful thing indeed.
The Art Of Immersion: A Special Issue Of Art In America
As a young gallery, Arte Original aims to become a popular gallery of Latin American art. They want to continue to support artists who don’t get the promotion their work deserves, build a community of art lovers and create jobs. Currently, 38% of the artists in the gallery are talented artists – their goal is to increase the proportion of female artists to 50% by 2023.
