The Metropolitan Transit Authority has unveiled permanent mosaic paintings by artists Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith that will bring life to the new Grand Central Madison subway station, which will open to the public later this month. In addition to the public art project for the new train station, these two large mosaics are part of an $11 billion project to expand the Long Island Rail Road. On December 22, the Hong Kong Asian Art Archive (AAA) announced the opening of the Ellen Pau Archive. The first phase of the reporting project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023, is available on AAA’s website. Born in Hong Kong in 1961, Pau pioneered visual art and new media technologies that reflect the city’s political and social life. In addition to the arts, he has been an important figure in the promotion, interpretation and education of Hong Kong’s visual culture, founding the non-profit Television and Microwave International New Media Arts Festival. Collecting a variety of digital documents, AAA’s new archive traces his work from the 1980s to the present day, with special recognition of his creative work during the “critical period in the arts of Hong Kong”.

Kalumburu owner Ian Waina joined us in Melbourne in October for a series of events including a Morning Tea with Scientists and Lab Visit at the University of Melbourne and a Rock Art Ambassador event at Canaccord Genuity.
Dr Helen Green has been awarded the University of Melbourne’s John McKenzie Scholarship. Helen was also recognized for her innovative research in archaeological geography with the University of Melbourne Dean’s Award for Research in the Early Career Researcher category. The rock paintings associated with the community of Wanjina Wunggurr in the Kimberley region of Western Australia are known to be some of the oldest surviving works of art in the world. It is on stamps issued by Australia Post.

Two North Kimberley Traditional Owner groups are featured in this stamp issue: the Ngarinyin people (Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation) and the Wunambal Gaambera (Uunguu) people (Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation).
Wunambal belongs to the Wanjina Wunggurr community of Gaambera (Uunguu), Wororra (Dambimangari) and Ngarinyin (Wilinggin). Their unique and powerful connection to the land is linked to their ancestors’ stories of Wunggurr (snake) spirits and their creator, Wanjina.
