“There are so many beautiful details that go into the Christmas story – Mary swaddling her baby, the surprise of the shepherds, that little town of Bethlehem. It’s easy to get caught up in all those perfect details, and I think we would be! However, as much as I love these details, I also love looking at the story through the lens of the big picture.

From a broad perspective, I think the whole story of Christmas can be summed up in one sentence in this text: “Good news of great joy for all” (Luke 2:10).
In a day and age where thousands of refugees die every year, Nazis walk our streets, and racial tensions run deep, this promise—that the birth of Jesus is good news for all and good news—is a promise saturated in the gospel message.
In this drawing, I put an abstract star in the top corner of the page—a star that cannot hold the light. This star reminds us of the star that guided the shepherds and wise men to Jesus, and how Jesus is our light—especially when we face suffering. The repeating circles symbolize that Jesus came for all – because God’s love and mercy are all, covering all creation and uniting us as one family. What better news could there be? A great joy, indeed.”
