Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, he made that clear recently during an hour-long phone interview overlooking Central Park from his New York City apartment.
How often does Garfunkel change his concert repertoire, which devotes almost two-thirds of the selection to songs from his partnership with Paul Simon? After recording a dozen solo albums in the five decades since Simon & Garfunkel’s debut in 1970, could he choose more solo material on his current tour?
“I’m really going to keep doing what I’m doing,” said Garfunkel, who performs Friday at the Balboa Theater in San Diego with guitarist Tab Love and keyboardist Dave McKay.

“Others may say, ‘You’re not changing your agenda.’ Not me. I love what I do. I can’t imagine how to change it. Why should I change it? If a painter is asked to paint the famous picture he painted (again), the That answer should be, “I’ll try it—I like it!”
“Should I ‘bridge over troubled waters’?” Garfunkel asked. “Shouldn’t I call for silence?” I’m close to feeling, “Here comes the greatest version of all time!”. So I always finish these songs.
The fact that Garfunkel rarely wrote any songs—unlike the legendary Simon—may have been a factor. On the other hand, being able to sing at all is a joy for Garfunkel, who quickly suggested “I don’t think so” in response to the obligatory “Will he and Simon ever make music together again?”
In the spring of 2010, when a reunited Simon and Garfunkel headlined the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Garfunkel’s voice disappeared halfway through the song.
Once a master of listening skills, he was surprised to find that his midrange sounded like a bell in a china shop. In addition, the high notes that were his trademark, were rather muted. A medical diagnosis showed that one of his vocal cords was stiffer than the other and was almost paralyzed.

The remainder of Simon & Garfunkel’s US tour has been cancelled. Garfunkel didn’t know if he would ever be able to sing again, let alone perform in any capacity. Even speaking became a big challenge. It took 18 months for New York to gently start singing itself. His recovery was painfully slow.
A longtime heavy smoker, Garfunkel quit in 2010. And, as he wrote in his 2017 memoir It’s All But Bright: Notes from an Underground Man, he also quit smoking that same year.
“Do you miss it?” He replied. “Are you tall? Oh, sorry. That’s not my favorite question.”

Garfunkel partially credits vocal exercises sent to him by San Diego-born singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop for helping him recover. He also mentions singing along to recordings by James Taylor, jazz singer Chet Baker, and former Valley Center troubadour JJ Cale.
Does music mean more to Garfunkel today, after years of touring, than it did before 2010?
“When I perform songs now, I thank God in the middle of the first song,” he said. “It’s great to have my voice back. To be able to get that voice up and hear the beauty of it all before they (the audience) do, you think, ‘Thank God.’

“It slowly came back in 2011 and then came back in 2014. So like never before, I love doing it.”
Garfunkel, 76, discussed a range of other topics, sometimes referring to himself in the third person. Here are edited excerpts of our conversation.
A: I go on two or three trips a year, always for a week or two. I traveled all over America and then Europe. Then I moved from Dublin to Istanbul and finished the tour about two years ago. Now I’m starting to get tired. The kids really don’t want to go. Now I go without a plan. I just try to take it with me as part of my daily routine. It is very good for us. We digest our food and our intellect comes to life when we move.

Q: When you checked into a two-star motel during your trip around the country, as you wrote in your book, did anyone recognize you?
A: Almost never. Recognition depends on what you give. In my life, I separate a person who is not a person. It has been many years since I became famous. I liked it at first. Then I tried to develop a defense, which is a case of the “I don’t feel popular” attitude and getting down to earth, and it worked. The vibe you give off is one thing. I can walk the streets of New York and if I choose to be anonymous, I can do so, 99 percent of the time. You wear a hat and walk with purpose, you are a vector who cares about your personal life.
Q: When you went on your big running adventure, I believe you had a Sony Walkman cassette player. what did you hear

Answer: I have an iPod now. If I had it on hand, I would show you my favorite. It’s full of 150 of my favorite classical and pop songs from Ravel, Duke Ellington, Chet Baker, where I want to sing along, where I can use my voice. I have very few Beatles, a little Joni Mitchell. Give it to me! I am proud of my (music) service. You asked a question that really resonated with me. Can you do it? I have a notebook with an iPad. I write, I listen. I sing as loud as I want.
Answer: I go for good things. “What do you mean, Mr. Garfunkel, by good things?” There’s real melody and rhythm going on and the songs aren’t cheesy, the Beatles had a lot of that stuff. Of course, when I’m looking for something, words are immediately reserved. If they have something stupid (in the text), I won’t do it. When someone sends me a demo, I listen to it. Is the language fresh or not, starting from the first stanza? Otherwise, why would a good song start out bad? It’s mostly a keeper for me.
Q: You mentioned earlier that you are constantly improving your concert repertoire. Do you ever change songs?

Answer: “Bridge over Troubled Waters” has been rebuilt. Please, this is a big change. Since I got my voice back, I haven’t had a big, impressive ending to “the bridge.” I never do Mrs. Robinson. I don’t sing “Old Friends” – it’s beautiful, but it takes two old friends to sing it. “Boxer” is in my hands, although I make a few changes.

Arthur Ira Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941) is an American singer, poet, and actor, best known for his work with Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. Born in Forest Hills, New York, Garfunkel met Simon during an elementary school play in Alice in Wonderland and was looking for a companion.
