Abstract artist Alteronce Gumby (above) is currently represented by Nicola Vassell Gallery in New York. Gumby creates “vibrant interstellar paintings that stem from a deep fascination with the cosmos and energy theory. His prismatic realms add new perspectives to the history of abstract painting by suggesting intentional connections between color, society, and the universe. Gumby was born in Harrisburg and lives and works in New York. Her first solo exhibition with Nicola Vassell, a gallery owned by a black woman, opens in September. | more

Tiwani Contemporary has announced the representation of Emma Prempeh (right) in London, England and Lagos, Nigeria. A London-based British artist of Ghanaian and Vincentian heritage, Prempeh is the gallery’s inaugural artist residency at G.A.S. Foundation in Lagos (August 2022). His first solo exhibition with Tiwani Contemporary opened on September 8 in Victoria Island, Lagos. | apart

Um Breaks Ground On New Montana Art And Culture Museum
Lynette L. Allston (above) has been elected chair of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) Board of Trustees in Richmond. Member of the board since 2017, he replaced Dr. Monroe E. Harris Jr., the first black man elected president of VMFA’s governing body. Allston is the first Native American president of the VMFA board of trustees and, according to the VMFA, the first Native American to chair the board of 10 full-fledged art museums in the United States. Allston is Chief and Emeritus of the Nottoway Indian Tribal Council in Virginia. In addition to his VMFA role, he chairs the board of directors for the Rawls Museum of the Arts in Courtland, Va. apart
Earlier this summer, Kara Tucina Olidge (right) joined the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles as Associate Director of Collections and Discovery. He previously served as executive director of the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans. British artist and educator Lubaina Himid (above) has won the 2024 Suzanne Deal Booth / FLAG Art Foundation Award. The award includes a cash prize of $200,000 and a solo exhibition that will debut in Texas at Contemporary Austin in the spring of 2024 and travel to the FLAG Foundation for the Arts in New York in the fall of 2024. more

Curator and multidisciplinary artist James Williams II won the $30,000 Sondheim prize. The annual award recognizes visual artists in the Baltimore area. The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded the MIT School of Architecture and Design’s Program in Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT) and the NEA Art Works Grant to support the digitization and online presentation of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies’ (CAVS) Special. Collection. .
As part of preserving this valuable collection, ACT created a free, publicly available, visually appealing and interactive user interface that will act as a “virtual museum” for over 40 years of material. It will feature images, audio, video and documents created by more than 200 CAVS fellows, including György Kepes, Otto Piene, Aldo Tambellini, Yvonne Rainer, Nam June Paik, Muriel Cooper and Stan VanDerBeek. Designed for artists and academics, the collection will include resources on MIT’s art history and experimental technology, as well as documentation of the art-making process.
